"Down on the Gulf of Mexico"

Well, even though my favorite place is pretty much destroyed, it doesn't stop me from writing songs about it. I had some of these lyrics in my head before Hurricane Katrina and finished them up tonight while I was out for my nightly walk.

Got tired of heartaches all the time
You playin' games with this heart of mine
Thought I'd pack up my things and go
Down on the Gulf of Mexico

I found a shack down by the beach
A little place where I can't be reached
Where I'm at only the Good Lord knows
Down on the Gulf of Mexico

Chorus:
The locals here are glad I came
Gettin' brown as my last name
I should've came here a long time ago
Down on the Gulf of Mexico

Sure there's heat, sure there's hurricanes
But aint no more heartache and pain
Like the tide, I just roll with the flow
Down on the Gulf of Mexico

"The Last to Be in Love"

As most of you that know me know, I've been writing some songs here and there over the past few years. But as of late, not only have I had writer's blog, but due to my finger injury, I've been unable to play guitar. However, while taking a long walk tonight, these lyrics just came to me out of the blue. Of course, it'll be awhile before I can set these to music, but I thought I'd go ahead and share them. I picture this to have a Huey Lewis kinda sound to it-- not country!

Me and the boys I've known since high school
Have always been lonely, lookin' for love, fools
Even though there's alot that's stayed the same
Seems like these days, things are startin' to change

My buddy, Joe's met someone off the internet
From some little ole town whose name I forget
And even Bobby's found his own midnight star
Who shines every night down at the local bar

CHORUS:
They say, "Good things come to those who wait"
And yeah, I'm usually the kind to procrastinate
I think it's safe to say I've waited long enough
I just don't wanna be the last to be in love

I've done all I can to meet that certain someone
I've tried ev'ry dot com dating site under the sun
And I'm not the kind to pick up strangers in a bar
The "I've got a single friend" thing hadn't worked so far

My friends say it'll happen when I least expect it
If my life was a movie, I'd sure let them direct it
'Cause maybe for once, this boy would get the girl
Since it never ends that way here in my world

The Biloxi Lighthouse

Ever wonder where this blog got it's name? Well, probably not, but here it is anyway-- the historic lighthouse in the middle of US 90 in Biloxi, Mississippi.

"Women"

I think I'll just let the words of this song speak for itself...

"Women"
by Darrell W. Brown (BMI) 2003

Sometimes they'll make you happy
Sometimes they'll make you sad
Sometimes they'll treat you like a king
And sometimes they'll treat you bad

Sometimes they want you cuddled in bed
Sometimes they want you out in the yard
Sometimes they want you to be a bad boy
But a good one when you go see their mom

CHORUS:
Yeah sometimes they're as cold as December
Sometimes they're hot as July
Sometimes they'll bring a smile to your face
And sometimes a tear to your eye
Sometimes they'll lead you down the straight path
And sometimes they'll make you sin
But no doubt about 'em, we can't live without 'em
Talkin' 'bout women

Sometimes they're hard to figure out
Sometimes they're easy to understand
Sometimes they're your worst enemy
And sometimes they're your biggest fan

Sometimes they wear their heart on their sleeve
Sometimes they bottle everything up
Sometimes they just want to be alone
And sometimes they can't get enough

"Ocean of Devotion"

This is another praise song that we used to sing in Children's Church at Central Baptist Church. I believe I wrote this in like two minutes while sitting out in my beach chair in Perdido Key, Florida a few summers ago.

"Ocean of Devotion"
by Darrell W. Brown (BMI) 2003

I've got an ocean of devotion
I've got a sea full of love
I've got a blue sky full of praises
For my Savior up above

His spirit lives within me
And it lifts me up so high
I believe I could touch the clouds
Just like the seagull in the sky

"Jack Benny"

For those of you that don't know, Jack Benny was a famous comedian back in the 30s-50s whose gimmick was that of a cheapskate. One day, my brother called my dad by this name. I had no idea who Jack Benny was or the meaning behind it. Brother then explained it to me and said that our dad was the ultimate cheapskate and I'm like, "Oh no, you don't know my best friend, Scott!" The following song is dedicated to my best friend of 23 years, Scott "Jack Benny" Freeling-- the cheapest man I know....

"Jack Benny"
by Darrell W. Brown (BMI) 2003

CHORUS:
I got a friend we call Jack Benny
We call him that 'cause he's so tight
He don't care as long as it's free
He's a carefree kind of guy
If you ask him to spare a dime
He'll say, "The time?"
"Oh, it's 12:02"
Yeah, we got a friend we call Jack Benny
'Cause he's so cheap it's true

Well my friend once had a date
With the cutest girl you'd ever seen
I told him to be sure and treat her right
He said, "Man I know what you mean"

They ended up that night at McDonalds
She said, "I can't believe you're for real!"
He said, "I can't believe you're so ungrateful!"
"I bought you a Happy Meal!"

REPEAT CHORUS

My friend he likes to go to church
He does his best to be a godly man
He freely gives of his time and money
Whenever he possibly can

The preacher called him into his office
With a Bible sittin' on his desk
He said, "We appreciate your donations"
"But you never seem to sign your checks"

REPEAT CHORUS

TAG:
He's a man of rare gifts
It's rare when he gives one
He likes to spend his days at the beach
'Cause it's free just to sit in the sun

REPEAT CHORUS
